I have been having some very interesting dreams lately. How about you?
Some of my dreams are very strange and seem to go on and on. There is a lot of chaos in my dreams right now, but it makes sense because there is a lot of chaos in the world, too.
Shortly after Gary and I were married, I started realizing that my dreams meant something more than I had been taught.
Both of us grew up in the Christian church and dreamt a lot. Yet our churches taught that while dreams were a Biblical experience, they were no longer sent from God.
Two dreams in particular got my attention.
The first was a similar recurring dream that both Gary and I were having. In these dreams, we were each living in a big mansion.
Because these were recurring dreams, Gary and I would discuss them with each other. We actually began a playful competition to see whose dream mansion was bigger and better. Both of us thought maybe these would be the mansions we would live in when we arrived in heaven.
One day we compared notes. To our astonishment, we were both dreaming about the same mansion!
This did not make sense to us. If these dreams were God’s way of giving us a sneak peek of where we would live in heaven, we also know Scripture tells us there is no marriage in heaven. So why were we dreaming about the same mansion?
In my second dream, I saw two boys – one taller than the other. Both boys were getting off of a school bus on the street where I grew up.
At that time Gary and I lived in South Minneapolis and had no children. I wondered if it was some sort of ESP type of dream (since at this point I still didn’t think God was giving me these dreams). It was a sweet dream. I tucked it in my heart.
I never forgot these two dreams, but I had no grid for what they might be about.
It wasn’t until many years later after I had grown in my walk with the Lord and learned more spiritual realities that I began to learn the truth about God-given dreams.
Over the span of several years, a few things happened that caught my attention.
Gary and I had two sons, four years apart. AND we unexpectedly moved to the block where I grew up. And yes, my sons did take the bus to school and were dropped off every day exactly where I dreamed they would be.
What was this? A strange cosmic fluke? Or did the God I serve have more to say through my dreams than I had been taught? I talked to God about this and told Him that I wanted any gift He wanted to give me. But I wanted to be sure that it was actually from Him.
It was important to me that I was not deceived by people who may have had good intentions but were spiritually misguided.
At that time I was serving in a church as the Equipping Pastor. It was my role to “equip the saints for the work of ministry.” We had been teaching the Alpha Course with wonderful results. People were coming to know the Lord and diving into the Scriptures deeply and passionately. The spiritual gifts were flowing, including prophetic words and dreams. It was a wonderful season.
However, these gifts were new to almost everyone. When people haven’t been properly trained to use their spiritual gifts in an honoring way, there can be unfortunate messes.
It became my role to teach and encourage the healthy use of spiritual gifts at our church. I prayed, studied the Scriptures and asked the Lord to lead me to resources that were Biblical and powerful.
A friend introduced me to John Paul Jackson’s teaching on Hearing God and Understanding Dreams. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get involved, thinking it might get weird. But then I had another dream about my mansion.
This time I was finding new rooms, and the mansion went on and on. I wondered what it meant, and I felt strangely drawn to find out more about John Paul Jackson’s ministry.
I ended up getting my dream interpreted and was extremely blessed by the Scripturally strong teaching that went along with it. I learned that God was speaking to me about my life. About good things available to me that He wanted to give me, and some things that I needed to deal with first before receiving these good things. I was hooked.
Decades later, I am still passionate about helping people walk out their destiny by learning to recognize and respond to God’s voice in a variety of ways, including dreams.
I am paying attention to the interesting dreams I have been having lately. I encourage you to do the same.
Jesus paid an invaluable price for you to be able to talk to Him at all times. Because of His Spirit in us, we can talk to God as a friend. It is an astonishing gift.
The God who created you and me – He created us with the ability to dream. He told us that a sign of the Spirit being poured out is dreaming.
“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” – Acts 2:17
Through these dreams, you can have a conversation with the God who is your Father, Friend, Comforter and Healer. You can receive warnings, get prophetic insights, receive healing and have time to talk with the lover of your soul.
The Talmud (a Jewish book of law) says, “A dream which is not interpreted is like a letter which is not read.”
I don’t believe all dreams need to be interpreted, but there are dreams where I definitely know something special is going on. I want to pay attention to those.
